-are verbs
The largest and most regular verb family: parlare, mangiare, abitare and thousands more.
Regular -are verbs keep their stem and take the endings -o, -i, -a, -iamo, -ate, -ano: parlare → parlo, parli, parla, parliamo, parlate, parlano.
Verbs in -care and -gare add an h before -i to keep the hard sound: giocare → giochi (not gioci), pagare → paghi. Verbs in -ciare and -giare drop one i in the tu and noi forms: mangiare → mangi (not mangii), mangiamo.
Most new verbs entering Italian are -are verbs, so this pattern is the safest default when you meet an unfamiliar regular verb.
stem + -o, -i, -a, -iamo, -ate, -ano
Examples
- Io parlo italiano. I speak Italian.
- Tu giochi a calcio? Do you play football?
- Noi mangiamo alle otto. We eat at eight o'clock.
- Loro abitano a Napoli. They live in Naples.
- Voi lavorate oggi? Are you (all) working today?
Common mistake
Writing gioci or pagi — with -care and -gare verbs, insert h before the -i endings: tu giochi, noi giochiamo, tu paghi.
