Articulated prepositions
When a preposition meets the, Italian fuses them into one word: al, della, nel.
Five prepositions — a, di, da, in, su — merge with the definite article. With il they give al, del, dal, nel, sul; with la: alla, della, dalla, nella, sulla; with lo: allo, dello, dallo, nello, sullo. Plurals follow the same logic: ai, dei, dai, nei, sui; alle, delle, dalle, nelle, sulle; agli, degli, dagli, negli, sugli.
Con (with) merges only optionally — con il → col is common in speech, but con la stays separate. Per, tra and fra never merge.
You will use these constantly: al cinema (to the cinema), della mattina (of the morning), dal dottore (at the doctor's), nel centro (in the centre), sul tavolo (on the table). Treat each fused form as a single word and learn the five columns of the table early.
Examples
- Andiamo al cinema. We are going to the cinema. (a + il)
- Il nome della ragazza è Anna. The girl's name is Anna. (di + la)
- Vengo dal supermercato. I am coming from the supermarket. (da + il)
- Abitiamo nel centro storico. We live in the historic centre. (in + il)
- Parliamo degli esami. We are talking about the exams. (di + gli)
Common mistake
Writing the parts separately (a il cinema, di la casa) — they must fuse: al cinema, della casa.
