Conditional for politeness
The conditional turns a demand into a request: vorrei, potrebbe, mi piacerebbe.
The conditional is formed like the future but with the endings -ei, -esti, -ebbe, -emmo, -este, -ebbero: parlerei, mangeresti, dormirebbe. It expresses wishes, advice, hypotheses — and, most importantly for a beginner, politeness.
Three forms cover most polite situations: vorrei (I would like, from volere), potrebbe (could you, from potere) and mi piacerebbe (I would like, from piacere). Vorrei un caffè is the standard way to order; Voglio un caffè sounds blunt.
English would like never maps onto the simple present — vorrei is one word and worth learning as a fixed chunk. For requests, Le potrebbe is formal: Potrebbe aprire la finestra? (Could you open the window?).
Examples
- Vorrei un tavolo per due. I would like a table for two.
- Potrebbe ripetere, per favore? Could you repeat that, please? (formal)
- Mi piacerebbe visitare Roma. I would like to visit Rome.
- Vorremmo prenotare una camera. We would like to book a room.
- Dovresti riposare di più. You should rest more.
Common mistake
Ordering with voglio (Voglio un caffè) — grammatically correct but abrupt. In cafés, shops and restaurants, use vorrei.
