Negation
Put non before the verb to make any sentence negative.
The whole system rests on one word: non goes directly before the verb. Parlo becomes Non parlo; Ho mangiato becomes Non ho mangiato — non comes before the auxiliary too.
Double negatives are correct and required with the negative words niente (nothing), nessuno (nobody, no), mai (never), più (no longer) and né ... né (neither ... nor): Non ho niente (I have nothing), Non vedo nessuno (I see nobody), Non mangio mai carne (I never eat meat).
If the negative word comes after the verb, non stays; if it starts the sentence, non is dropped: Nessuno parla (Nobody speaks), Mai mi sono sentito così (rare, emphatic). For a beginner, the safe pattern is always non + verb + negative word.
Examples
- Non parlo francese. I do not speak French.
- Non ho capito niente. I did not understand anything.
- Non c'è nessuno. There is nobody here.
- Non lavoro più qui. I no longer work here.
- Non mangiamo né carne né pesce. We eat neither meat nor fish.
Common mistake
Avoiding the double negative (Ho niente) — Italian requires non with niente, nessuno and mai when they follow the verb: Non ho niente.
