c’è and ci sono

C'è and ci sono are the Italian way to say there is and there are.

C'è (from ci + è) states that one thing exists or is present: C'è un problema (There is a problem), C'è un bar qui vicino (There is a café near here). Ci sono is the plural: Ci sono due banche in questa strada (There are two banks in this street).

The negative is non c'è / non ci sono: Non c'è tempo (There is no time). Questions use rising intonation: C'è un treno alle nove? (Is there a train at nine?).

Do not confuse ci sono with ecco: ecco means here is / here are when you point at or hand over something — Ecco il tuo caffè! (Here is your coffee!). C'è and ci sono state existence; ecco presents a thing you can see.

c'è + singular | ci sono + plural
