Che giorno è oggi?
What day is it today?
IPA /ke ˈdʒorno ˈɛ ˈɔddʒo/
Say it keh JOHR-noh eh OD-joh
Say the days, months and seasons, give the date and your birthday, make plans for specific days, and say what is possible or permitted with potere, si può and bere. Add the reflexive past: mi sono svegliato.
Say these aloud before you start. They come from earlier lessons.
The days of the week are lunedì, martedì, mercoledì, giovedì, venerdì, sabato, domenica. They are written with a small letter, never a capital. All are masculine except la domenica. To say on a particular day, use the day alone: Vado a Roma venerdì — I am going to Rome on Friday.
The seasons are la primavera, l'estate, l'autunno, l'inverno. Use in with seasons: in primavera, in estate, in autunno, in inverno.
For parts of the day, learn four fixed expressions: di mattina (in the morning), nel pomeriggio (in the afternoon), di sera (in the evening), di notte (at night).
Italian dates use il plus the number plus the month: il tre maggio — the third of May. The months are gennaio, febbraio, marzo, aprile, maggio, giugno, luglio, agosto, settembre, ottobre, novembre, dicembre, and they are also written with a small letter.
Only the first day of the month is different: il primo maggio, il primo giugno. Every other day uses the ordinary number: il due, il tre, il venti, il trentuno.
To ask about a birthday, say Quando è il tuo compleanno? To answer, say È il quindici giugno. To say when you were born, use nascere with essere: sono nato (male speaker), sono nata (female speaker).
Potere means to be able to and works exactly like volere and sapere from lesson 3: potere plus the infinitive. Posso venire — I can come. Non posso lavorare domenica — I can't work on Sunday.
The forms are irregular: posso, puoi, può, possiamo, potete, possono. Learn them as a set.
For general rules — what anyone may or may not do — Italian uses the impersonal si: Si può entrare? — Can you go in? Non si può fumare. — Smoking is not allowed.
Bere looks like a regular -ere verb, but it is not. It comes from the old form bevere and keeps the stem bev- in every form: bevo, bevi, beve, beviamo, bevete, bevono.
The past participle is bevuto: Ho bevuto un caffè — I drank a coffee.
In lesson 7 you learnt reflexive verbs in the present: mi sveglio, ti alzi, ci riposiamo. In the passato prossimo every reflexive verb takes essere, never avere: mi sono svegliato — I woke up.
Because the auxiliary is essere, the past participle agrees with the subject, exactly as with andare and venire in lesson 6. A man says mi sono svegliato, a woman mi sono svegliata; a group says ci siamo alzati or ci siamo alzate.
The reflexive pronoun goes before the whole group: Ieri mi sono alzata tardi — Yesterday I got up late.
| potere — can | volere — to want | sapere — to know | |
|---|---|---|---|
| io | posso | voglio | so |
| tu | puoi | vuoi | sai |
| lui / lei | può | vuole | sa |
| noi | possiamo | vogliamo | sappiamo |
| voi | potete | volete | sapete |
| loro | possono | vogliono | sanno |
All three are followed directly by the infinitive: posso venire, voglio venire, so nuotare.
| bere | |
|---|---|
| io | bevo |
| tu | bevi |
| lui / lei | beve |
| noi | beviamo |
| voi | bevete |
| loro | bevono |
Every form keeps the old stem bev-. Past participle: bevuto — ho bevuto.

|---|---|---|
| Monday | lunedì | |
| Tuesday | martedì | |
| Wednesday | mercoledì | |
| Thursday | giovedì | |
| Friday | venerdì | |

Five days end in -dì, from the Latin word for day. Small letters, no capitals.

| January | gennaio | |
| February | febbraio | |
| March | marzo | |
| April | aprile | |
| May | maggio | |
| June | giugno | |
| July | luglio | |
| August | agosto | |
| September | settembre | |
| October | ottobre | |
| November | novembre | |

Dates: il + number + month — il tre maggio. Only the first is il primo.
| present | passato prossimo | |
|---|---|---|
| io | mi sveglio | mi sono svegliato / svegliata |
| tu | ti alzi | ti sei alzato / alzata |
| lui / lei | si veste | si è vestito / vestita |
| noi | ci riposiamo | ci siamo riposati / riposate |
Reflexive verbs always take essere in the past, and the participle agrees with the subject.
Learn these words with their pronunciation. Nouns are given with their article — always learn them together.
